This song is cited from the 99th page of History of Zhejiang Songs and Ballads (《浙江歌谣源流史》). It eulogizes Cao E for her shining example in filial piety. Cao E (曹娥, 130—143) was a girl from Shangyu (上虞), Zhejiang, who dedicated her life on the 5th of the fifth lunar month in 143 AD to the rescue of her father, who drowned in the Shun River. To cherish their memory of her, people have renamed the river as the Cao E River and built memorial temples in her honor.
Plain as the language is and direct the style, the song helps carry on the ethics that sons and daughters should perform filial duties and be grateful to their parents.
