Abstract:This article studies works relevant to Huang Kan(often called with his courtesy name as Mr. Jigang,1886—1935), including his Miscellaneous Collection of Huang Kan's Discussions on Learning and Thirteen Classics Punctuated by Huang Kan; Notes of Chinese Etymology, Phonology, and Semantics, dictated by Huang Kan and edited by his nephew Huang Zhuo(courtesy name Yaoxian,1902—1984); Huang Kan's Diary, written from 1913 to 1935, with three volumes in total; Notes of The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, written by Huang Kan and introduced by Zhou Xunchu(1929—); the doctoral dissertation of Dr.Li Jing from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Fudan University; and several articles of academic journals related to Huang Kan's academic studies. Starting with Chinese etymology, phonology, and semantics, it discusses the stages of Huang's Classic of Changes studies and annotations of the Changes of Zhou. Huang studied classics assiduously and elucidated their meanings on the basis of a syntactic and semantic analysis. He respected and believed in old teachings and thus never easily changed the words in the classics. His opinion of classics studies that advocates“analyzing the sentences and tracing the origins”and“looking for the hidden, searching for the deep, and having a long influence”are enough to be regarded as models. This article provides a preliminary view in hope to attract more scholars to study Huang Kan and consequently enhance the dim light of his Classic of Changes studies.
