Tokyo is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the largest metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo is in the Kantōregion on the southeastern side of the main island Honshuand includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture and the city of Tokyo. Tokyo has been described as one of the three "command centers" for the world economy, along with New York City and London. Tokyo ever hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics and is currently a candidate city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Visit Imperial Palace 参观日本皇宫

The current Imperial Palace is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo. In Imperial Palace, visitors can view the famous sight spot-Nijubashi, two bridges that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds. The palace buildings and inner gardens are not open to the public. Only on January 2 (New Year's Greeting) and December 23 (Emperor's Birthday), visitors are able to enter the inner palace grounds and see the members of the Imperial Family, who make several public appearances on a balcony.
